I knew I was an AudioVole when…

When was the first time you heard music? No, not the first Oldies song that you knew all the lyrics to or the Paula Abdul music video that you studied obsessively. When was the first time you realized music would become as important in your life as, say, three meals a day? When did music … Continue reading

LITTLE GOLD – Weird Freedom (Pts 1-2)

Zach Evans and Jenn Lao back and forth about former Woods bandmember Christian DeRoeck’s newest band Little Gold and their sophomore album, Weird Freedom. It’s “nostalgia rock.” Seriously, watch their video for “Mike Swan” – not exactly the nostalgia their sound would seem to invoke, more lo-fi alt rock circa 1993, but nostalgic nonetheless.

LITTLE GOLD – Weird Freedom (Part 2 of 2)

Grab your Funyuns, Jenn and Zach wrap up the Little Gold Weird Freedom dialectic musing on the perils of a falsetto voice, life in a cubicle, and J Mascis. Also the “Mike Swan” video which there’s no freaking way it’s not from the early 90s. They’re taking “nostalgia rock” to a whole new level with … Continue reading

LITTLE GOLD – Weird Freedom (Part 1 of 2)

Weird Freedom is the sophomore release from former Woods band member, Christian DeRoeck and his band, Little Gold. It’s also their first album as a proper band and the inaugural release on their own Loud Baby Sounds imprint. Important things to note: they don’t sound like Woods; they are fun and make wives want to … Continue reading

MISTER HEAVENLY – Out of Love (Pts 1-4+)

Senior contributor, Chris Mollica, and newest AudioVoler, Jennifer Lao, dissect Out of Love, the debut album from Mister Heavenly, a threesome comprised of Unicorns/Islands frontman, Nick Thorburn, Man Man’s Ryan Kattner (aka Honus Honus), and Modest Mouse drummer, Joe Plummer. Then Brandon, who can’t keep his mouth shut, jumps into the fray. The full conversation … Continue reading

MISTER HEAVENLY – Out of Love (Part 4+)

Jenn tries to wrap things up by comparing Out of Love to Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and the Shirelles. It makes more sense when you read it. It does end up inciting Chris’s rage, however, and he vows to spend the rest of his days hunting down Jennifer Lao, his newest arch … Continue reading

MISTER HEAVENLY – Out of Love (Part 3.5)

A rapid fire six point response to Chris’s letter courtesy of one Brandon Hall.

MISTER HEAVENLY – Out of Love (Part 3)

Chris blows up Broken Social Scene for no good reason. Also the Shins. And WU LYF. Chris, apparently, likes everything besides Mister Heavenly and Ocean’s 12. He also does an impression of Brandon. But really, that’s like a Cosby impression. Everybody’s got one.

MISTER HEAVENLY – Out of Love (Part 2+)

Jenn took some time to respond, but it was most definitely worth the wait. Some cliffs notes: “Bronx Sniper” makes her break things; her mom is like George Clooney in the saddest way; she’s considering bringing mustachioed men into her shower. Read on.

MISTER HEAVENLY – Out of Love (Part 1.5)

So, Brandon couldn’t hold his tongue. He was all excited to take the week off but he’s an opinionated SOB, so while Jenn suffered an all-nighter at her job, Brandon sat and stewed. And stewed. And thought, “You only know one Man Man song? One!?” (Where’s an interrobang when you need one!?) Buy Out of … Continue reading
